The Trial or The Woeful Story of Joseph K (SLO)

AN INTERACTIVE THEATRE TRIAL

KAFKA AND THE AUDIENCE ARE BROUGHT TO COURT

In this timeless musical-puppet composition, the audience is mercilessly placed in the role of the accused, Joseph K. The audience finds itself trapped in a suffocating societal machine and experiences the accused’s hopelessness in real-time along with some of the people he holds nearest and dearest. The audience is placed in the center of the proceedings, where they must responsibly submit themselves to the tender mercy of the Trial.

“The Trial” is a novel written by Franz Kafka and published in 1925. One of his best-known works, it tells the story of a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime revealed neither to him nor to the reader. The Slovenian Puppet Theatre Maribor have translated Kafka’s work into a rare performance that combines dark humor, poetry, hand puppets … and even offers a few wacky musical moments.

BLACK HUMOR, HANDPUPPETS AND A JUDICIAL NIGHTMARE
Two puppeteer-performers, dressed in the long leather coats favored by Eastern European secret policemen, freely adapt Kafka’s judicial nightmare using finger puppets, items of clothing and an all-purpose cabinet. The play brilliantly uses black humor, hand puppets, the poetry of object-related theatre, and cabaret improvisation to draw in its audience. Two actors, musicians and puppeteers run the machine system. Gentle puppet scenes alternate with strong rhythmic effects that occasionally erupt into a concert. We are excited!
